Katherena Vermette is a Canadian Métis writer and filmmaker. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in a tight-knit Métis community. Vermette has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Winnipeg and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. She is best known for her award-winning novel, "The Break," which explores the lives of Indigenous women in Winnipeg's North End.
Vermette's writing often focuses on themes of identity, family, and the impact of historical trauma on Indigenous communities. In addition to writing, she is also a filmmaker and has co-directed and co-produced several short films. Vermette continues to use her platform to raise awareness and advocate for Indigenous issues in Canada.
